Stocksbridge & Deepcar Community First Responders
The Stocksbridge and Deepcar scheme has been up and running now since 2006 and members have attended over 80 incidents in the area (as at Jan 09), providing treatment to local people who have had to call for ambulance assistance. The scheme has been fortunate in receiving support from a number of local organisations including the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, Leighton Cars, The Old Queen’s Head pub, Outu Kumpu, and Kenrey Steels Ltd which has allowed the group to purchase extra equipment.
A number of Community First Responder projects operate elsewhere in Yorkshire and there are schemes all over the Sheffield area that need new volunteers.
The scheme is voluntary and people who come forward will be taught how to use a defibrillator and how to administer oxygen. We want as many people to volunteer as possible and are planning future courses in South Yorkshire.
We know that in many medical emergencies the first few minutes are critical. If effective treatment can be performed within those few minutes, lives can be saved and disability reduced
Community First Responder schemes already operate locally in areas such as Stocksbridge and Deepcar, Penistone, Beighton & Sothall, Waterthorpe, Fulwood & Lodgemoor, Woodseats, Dore & Totley, Upperthorpe & Crookes, Stannington, Shiregreen & Wincobank, Chapeltown.
All training and equipment will be provided but Community First Responders will be required to use their own transport. Potential Responders should have no more than three penalty points on their driving licence, they must be over 18 and physically able to carry out the role. Criminal Records Bureau checks will be carried out on all candidates.
