Objectives of Plastic Bag Reduction

  • To educate local traders and consumers of the environmental issues related to using plastic carrier bags
  • To promote environmental alternatives which are practical
  • To support local tradres in finding alternatives to plastic bags
  • To promote the town and its traders as a “plastic bag free” area
  • To celebrate the town’s achievements

How can I help with Plastic Bag Reduction?

A survey undertaken on December 2007 in the Town Centre found that 1 in every 3 people had there own re-usable shopping bag. If you’d like to become one of those people carrying a re-usable bag here’s what you can do:

  • Look out for the Plastic Bag Amnesty Stalls which will be in the town centre over the summer.
  • Say “NO – I have my own bag thanks” when offered a plastic bag in a shop
  • Carry your own reusable bag(s) in the boot of your car so you always have them with you
  • Canvass your MP to pressure the government to ban Plastic bags: Fax Your MP

Supporters of Plastic Bag Reduction

During the first phase of our campaign, all of the local traders in Stocksbridge & Deepcar were approached to register their support to make The Valley a Plastic Bag Free Area. The list below represents those who signed up and supported the initiative, many are already selling reusable bags and others are reusing plastics bags that people hand into them.
